8: Octagon Hall

This hall features portraits of Maine governors dating back to the 1930s. Once a governor leaves office and a new portrait is added, all other governor portraits move one space down. Portraits of earlier governors are relocated or put into storage at the Maine State Museum, which has responsibility for all the portraits

Look up and check out an interior view of the dome. Notice the windows circling the dome.

Each window represents one of Maine’s 16 counties. If you want a better view of the dome’s interior, proceed up to the fourth floor to the rotunda. Lining the walls around the rotunda are portraits of some members of Maine’s judicial branch of government.
