This dramatic marble staircase was constructed during the 1890-91 building renovations, when the State House’s west wing was added.

An imposing portrait of George Washington hangs at the top of the staircase.

Painted by Thomas T. Spear, this painting is a copy of an earlier work by Gilbert Stuart. In 1836, Spear brought the painting to the new State House, hoping to sell it for $1,000 and cash in on the nation’s great affection for Washington. Maine’s frugal government declined to make the purchase and the painting stayed on loan for 11 years. During that time, Spear sold the painting to a New York printmaker, but it didn’t leave the State House. Finally, the printmaker’s widow asked for the painting’s return, or its purchase for $300. Maine’s government purchased it.
