Behind the staircase to the left is the governor’s office. The cabinet room, a visitor waiting area, and offices for the executive staff are nearby. Relocated here in 1972, the governor’s office was originally the location of the secretary of state’s office.

Janet Trafton Mills completed her first four-year term as governor in January 2023, following her re-election to a second term in November 2022. Governor Mills was born and raised in Farmington, Maine, where she still maintains a home. She first entered public service as an assistant attorney general and was later elected district attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties, making her the first woman to be elected to that position in New England. Before becoming governor, she served as the attorney general of Maine – the first woman to hold the job. Governor Mills is the first woman to serve as Maine’s governor.
