Plaque in Honor of Maine Citizens Who Served in the Korean War Following North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in 1950, the United States allied with South Korea to stop the spread of communism. The fighting ended with an armistice in 1953.

Plaque in Honor of All Maine Veterans of the Vietnam War and in Memory of those Killed or Missing in Action More than 48,000 men and women from Maine served in Vietnam; 343 were killed in combat. This plaque commemorating their service features a wreath of pine, oak, and laurel leaves, symbolizing Maine and the qualities of strength and honor.

State of Maine Global War on Terrorism Memorial In recent decades, the battlefield cross has taken on significance as a memorial because it provides a way for soldiers to mourn a fallen comrade near the field of battle. The battlefield cross became common in the Gulf and Iraq Wars as a symbol of loss, mourning, and closure for the living.
