A Former Governor and His Beloved Dog

This is the president of the Senate’s office. Before 1972, the governor’s office was located here.

When Governor Percival Baxter came to work here, he had Garry, his beloved Irish setter, with him. Garry made the scratch marks on an interior office door. Those marks have been preserved and remain to this day!

In 1923, Garry died while Percival Baxter was in office. The governor ordered the flag over the State House lowered to half-staff out of respect for his pet. Many people objected to this gesture, but Governor Baxter defended it, saying that animals should be honored for their services. A portrait of Governor Baxter and Garry hangs next to the office entrance.
